Tape 1.0 is here — the first version out of beta.

What started as a way to play your own library from your phone is now a complete music suite. Your music, playlists and listening history stay on your computer; your phone reaches them at home or anywhere through a private, encrypted connection; and you can share tracks and build playlists with other people's hubs, hub to hub, with no cloud in between. Months of betas turned into this release: thank you to everyone who installed them, sent diagnostics and told us what broke — 1.0 is built on that.

From here on, 1.0.x updates are fixes and 1.x updates bring new features.

New

• Share a track with another Tape Hub — One link per track. You choose whether the other hub can only listen or also keep a copy, for how long the link and the access last, and you can revoke it at any time.
• Shared — A new view under Inbox lists every track other hubs shared with you, on their own or inside a collaborative playlist, until you add it to your library. It shows what the other hub sent, who shared it and whether it plays right now (Available, Hub offline, Not on that hub, No access, Revoked). Add one track, a selection (click, Shift, Cmd/Ctrl) or all of them; the copy goes to your shared-tracks folder, chosen once. Clear all revoked removes dead shares, History keeps every share with the hub's name and ID, and columns can be hidden from the header.
• Paste a share link — With a share link copied, press Cmd/Ctrl+V anywhere in Tape (outside a text field) and the invite opens right there, without the browser.
• Remote tracks everywhere — Shared tracks appear in search tagged Remote. Their page says who shared them, and Import keeps a copy and opens it in your library.
• Drag a shared track onto a playlist — Tape asks, downloads a copy and shows the download until the track is in the playlist.
• Playlists — Finder-style multi-select, drag the selection, compact rows with an artist column, and remove from playlist.
• Play queue — A Queue button next to Next shows what plays now and next: click a track to jump to it, × to take it out. Track pages get Add to queue next to Play.
• Know what can play — Remote tracks carry an orange dot ("Remote") and a remote icon in the File column; when the hub that shared them is offline or no longer has them, they turn grey and cannot be started. Tracks whose file has gone missing are marked unavailable too, and the queue skips both.
• Shared & collaborative imports folder — Downloads from other hubs go to a folder Tape suggests (Music › Tape › Shared): confirm it the first time or pick another. Folders › Manage sources shows it.
• Lighter install — Tape now ships its own audio-only FFmpeg on macOS, Windows and Linux: a much smaller download, with every format Tape plays (including AIFF, WMA and 32-bit WAV).
• Open source licenses — Settings › About lists the open source components inside Tape and their licenses.
• Tape Server (Docker) — Mount your music under /music and Tape adds it by itself when the container starts; Folders › Add music shows what is mounted. "Show in Folders" opens a track's folder inside Tape, and buttons that need the desktop app are gone from the web UI.

Fixes

• A shared track the other hub has not prepared yet plays on the first try instead of loading forever.
• Opening an older track invite no longer crashes the app.
• A shared track without an artist is saved under its title, not "Unknown artist - title".
• Long folder paths wrap in Manage sources instead of widening the dialog.
• Re-enrich searches freely, Inbox search works, "Show in" uses each system's file manager, and renaming refreshes the lists.
• Shared FLAC tracks played in lossless no longer stop with "Audio decoding failed".
• M3U playlists saved on Windows keep accented names (no more "Caff�"), and the import step explains in plain words which folder to add.

Upgrade notes

• Hubs that share tracks with each other should both run Tape 1.0: new track links need it on the receiving side.
• Update the mobile app to 2.0 for the Shared filter in its Library.
